Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa) is a common, but colorful desert shrub that can be found in a variety of habitats, from gravely slopes to open sandy washes. Brittlebush resin has been used for everything from glue to chewing gum. The brittle stems were also used by old-time cowboys as a toothbrush.
