The TransAlaska Pipeline rides on special support columns in permfrost heavy areas, like this location near Coldfoot, Alaska, high above the Arctic Circle. The support columns were designed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and keep the ground around the column posts frozen keeping the pipeline from sinking into the tundra.
