The Chatanika gold dredge was owned by F.E. Company and operated from 1928 to 1958, pulling millions in gold from the frozen soil. The dredge is located at about 27.5 meters (90 ft) off the Steese Highway east of Fairbanks in a 60 acres (24 ha) pond it dug itself. Today the dredge is private property and off-limits to the public, although there are many trails through the tailing piles where a lucky few can find Mastadon teeth and other bones.
